Organic Gardening With Earthworms
As I went for a stroll this morning after the rain, which has been falling non-stop for days, I noticed an earthworm on the tar. I decided to rescue it from certain death if perhaps a car came by and flattened it. It was so small that I could not pick it up so I used a nearby leaf as a scoop. The little critter wasn’t satisfied with the leaf and slid onto my hand to explore. It must have been at home because it started to defecate a couple of times right there.
A few years ago an old friend visited my home and declared that the soil in our garden was so rock hard (it was hard clay soil) that nothing will grow there. There was nothing I could say on the subject! Well, one day I read in a book that earthworms are our greatest allies in gardening. It also said that earthworms feed on refuse from the kitchen table like peels, vegetable offcuts, used tea leaves, etc. I set about building a compost heap from leftovers and stuff. A few months later we had the most beautiful soil and from then onwards it became a habit of not throwing the refuse away, but giving it to the garden where the earthworms could feed on it.
Now, when you visit us, you will find beautifull vegetables growing in our garden. Yesterday we enjoyed the most delicious pumpkins directly from our garden to the kitchen where it was prepared – you can’t get fresher or healthier than that. We daily pick what we need and have green peppers, green chillies, Tomatoes, carrots, pumpkins, beans at the moment.
I owe a great debt to those small earthworms hidden underground in my garden soil. They tirelessly enjoy all the scraps we leave for them, turning the soil into a rich medium in which we grow our vegetables. And the best of all is that we don’t have to spend anything on chemicals to fertilize the garden. We have discovered organic gardening and won’t change a thing.
The little earthworm was placed in a small container with its own meal and soil along with a couple of my local earthworms as mates. Maybe others won’t appreciate an earthworm being saved, but I know how valuable they are. Because of them I can enjoy a tasty meal fresh out of my garden. Thank God for earthworms!
