Design My Garden
How can i protect my garden from the rain whilst i dig it?
Im trying to re-design my garden but we are having really bad weather recently and its filled up the trenches i have dug for my new walls with rain. We have really bad drainage in the garden so its not draining away quickly. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive way to cover/protect the garden from the rain which would allow me to continue working in the garden at the same time?
My garden is 5m wide by 9m long (if that makes any difference?) I was going to nail polythene to the fences to cover the garden but i thought that might rip and blow away in the wind?! Any other ideas are most welcome! Thanks
Im redesigning the garden ie, building walls, changing levels etc, so it has to be something that will allow me to do this without the ground getting wet – like a gazebo or something.
The fact that your trench filled with water should tell you something about your soil and future problems. I can help you with both the drainage and other problems, however, not being G.. I can only help in real time.
Be grateful for this problem. Plants you may have placed would be subject to rot or worse. Now you can correct the problems, at a less expense. Let the rain fall. Put a yardstick or measuring device in the pit/trench and measure how much it lowers or raises per day. Do this for a week and monitor the rainfall during this time.
This will tell us if you need modified soil, gravel, or a simple
irrigation diversion. I’m called cheap ( I prefer frugal) by my wife and people I design for. I am sure I can help, however, I need to know the water levels and the plants you wish to use.
Let the rain fall. A year from now it may or it may fall even more. We will deal with what is as it is an indication of what was and can be. This way we can deal with today and a worse case.
Good Luck. I am at gjgjobs@yahoo.com.

All About Designing a Garden
Designing a garden doesn’t have to be difficult, you just need to know what to keep in mind when doing so. Many people try and treat the garden a a completely separate entity when in reality you can design it as if it was a house. In this article are the going through a few of the major elements of the garden so that you can sign in to the best of your ability.
First of all, like a house, you have the floor. In many cases this will be a lawn or patio so you need to think about which is best for your garden and which will suit you the most. The majority of the time people go for a mixture of the two different options which works well as long as you know how to make sure your lawn is kept in good condition.
Once you have worked out what you’re going to put on the floor that you need to think about how you are going to decorate the surrounding fences. This can be as simple as just adding a bench to the fence, or you could even add some ivy or crawling plants.
Once you have done that the finishing touch to a garden is often the furniture. Many people tend to overlook garden furniture assuming that it is not as important as other kinds of decoration. However this really is not the case as the furniture can go a long way to defining what your garden looks like and what kind of personality it has.

What garden protectors are there?
Hi our school is having an environment week and my class are designing garden protectors to keep animals away.
Do you know of any good websites to show what the different animals are scared of when they come to the garden. Also what kind of garden protectors are there other than scarecrows, wind chimes etc.
A very good and relatively cheap garden protector would be a small electric fence. I am from the New England area and the number one pest is deer and rabbits that eat pretty much anything they can get to. This fence has a small zap, withstandable to the “quick” human touch, but will keep pests away. I have one, which was relatively easy to install and has worked better than any other remidies. This included 1) aluminum pans tied to string on a tree to create noise, propped shaddow animals such as a fox (does scare geese away though) and even my dog.
