Peace Rose Bush
What do you think this means?
Does anyone know? Its a discussion question for our class, and I can’t figure it out!
Very near my setting sun, I bless you, Life
because you never gave me neither unfilled hope
nor unfair work, nor undeserved sorrow/pain
because I see at the end of my rough way
that I was the architect of my own destiny
and if I extracted the sweetness or the bitterness of things
it was because I put the sweetness or the bitterness in them
when I planted Rose Bushes I always harvested roses
Certainly, winter is going to follow my youth
But you didn’t tell me that May was eternal
I found without a doubt long my nights of pain
But you didn’t promise me only good nights
And in exchange I had some peaceful ones
I loved, I was loved, the sun caressed my face
Life, you owe me nothing, Life, we are at peace
Let’s take “At Peace” by Amado Nervo piece by piece…
In stanza 1, “Very near my setting sun,” the narrator is near the end of his life. He continues, “I bless you, Life/because you gave me neither unfilled hope/nor unfair work, nor undeserved sorrow/pain” — the narrator thanks “life” because his hopes have been filled, work has always been fair, and he has not had any hard times he didn’t deserve.
In stanza 2, the narrator continues to look back and sees he “was the architect of my own destiny” — or, in other words, in control of his own fate. The next 3 lines basically say he ‘reaped what he sowed.’
In stanza 3, I find this translation a little awkward. Here’s another translation:
And yes, after my flourishing, winter will follow,
But you didn’t promise me an eternal spring.
And, yes, it’s true, our troubled nights were long,
But you never promised us only the good nights
And some nights were so serene and blessed.
… so, in other words, the narrator expected winter (old age) to follow “spring” (or youth). But he is not troubled by this because that’s how life is: life never “promised” only good times. So the narrator celebrates both the “troubled nights” (or hard times) and the “serene and blessed” times.
Finally, in the close, the narrator reflects that he was loved and has had a good life. He is at peace.

Most are bare root. Bare root needs to be soaked for about 12 hours. I use to put mine in our bath tub. You can also use a large wash tub outside.
Do not buy too many at one time. It is very difficult to plant lots of roses all in one day. Most will not live.
You need a special rose mix for healthy beautiful roses. Most local nurseries will have rose mixes. Ask them how to use it.
Roses need lots and lots of deep watering. And rose fertilizing.
I just had an idea…how about getting a gardening center to plant them for your mom. Check under landscaping in the telephone’s yellow pages. Or check with a nursery.
