Rose Of Sharon Shrub
Can I start a new plant?

I have a well established Rose of Sharon. It’s next to the trunk of a large tree and can’t grow into a nice shrub like it should. It’s too large to move and I was wondering if it would be possible to take a start off of it. Then when the start develops good enough roots I could plant it in a better spot. What do you think???
I could really use an answer that is specific to the Rose of Sharon.

yes you can do this…A greenhouse is not necessary for successful propagation by stem cuttings; however, maintaining high humidity around the cutting is critical. If rooting only a few cuttings, you can use a flower pot (Figure 1). Maintain high humidity by covering the pot with a bottomless milk jug or by placing the pot into a clear plastic bag. Cuttings can also be placed in plastic trays covered with clear plastic stretched over a wire frame (Figure 2). Trays must have holes in the bottoms for drainage. The plastic will help keep the humidity high and reduce water loss from the cuttings.

i pruned my rose of sharon all the down to 2 inches last fall. i live in chicago. did i kill it?

It’s nearly impossible to kill a Rose of Sharon. The darn things grow more like weeds. They also take longer to wake up in the spring than many other plants. Just give it more time. I’m sure it’s fine.
