first year gardening, sad tomato plant?

So far so good, I’m very proud of myself…:)
However, I planted a patio variety tomato in a medium size planter. The plant has gotten huge! (very tall and bushy), looks like it’s about to pop out of it’s housing. It’s showing some fruit but it does not look very healthy to me, some of the branches are showing a few cracks and the leaves seem to be losing some color. After having a good look at it I’m guessing the plant is not getting enough nutrients from the soil. It seems very root heavy.

I wouldn’t advise to transplant it now. It’s a lot of stress for the plant and you could lose not only the fruit but some more of the plant.
Why don’t you start fertilizing it? Also, remove suckers and make sure it’s watered enough. Check on it a few more times to make sure it’s not drying out too much. The cracks could be due to the stems getting too heavy for it to bear. Maybe try to give them some support like by attaching them with string to a stick.

Keeping this vast root system watered daily is even more important as the plant’s health depends on a gallon of water a day.

This tip will not take the place of other tomato gardening tips involving staking, or tomato cages to hold the plants up. Some people who have large spacious gardens will let them spread and grow on the ground. Anyone who has ever grown a tomato knows that at one point it just goes wild and you can hardly keep up with it. You will keep pinching new growth and take care of your plants and know that all of this is due to the strong root system!.
