i have a math question that reads: Jen has 24 m of fencing to enclose a vegetable garden at the back of their house. What are the dimensions of the largest rectangular garden they could enclose with his lenght of fencing?
there is a picture of a rectungler hosue and tahn a little “box” garden attached to it (so now there is fence only at 3 of the walls of the rectangle the 4th one is the house wall)

Let x be the distance of the far side (parallel) to the house wall.
You will have two lengths x and one length (24 – 2x) to add up to 24 metres.
Area = x * (24-2x) = 24x – 2x², diferentiate…
Area’ = 24 – 4x = 0 at x=6.
So your maximum area is 6*12 =72 m² if you have two 6m sides and a 12m side parallel to the side of the house.
Don’t let anyone tell you the square is optimal, that only gives you 8² = 64 m². The square isn’t optimal because you have a free side without using up the fencing.
